Permeability is the property of a material that allows gas to pass through under differential pressure. Because gas passes through the through-air hole in the material, the permeability is related to the size, quantity, structure and state of the through-air hole, and varies with the direction of pressure when refractory products are formed. It is related to the porosity, but irregular, and different from the porosity. For some refractories, air permeability is a key index, which directly affects the corrosion resistance of corrosion resistant media such as slag, molten steel, molten iron and various gases (vapors), oxidation resistance, air permeability and so on. For some materials, such as products used to isolate flame or high temperature gas or to contact molten slag or metal directly, low permeability is required, while for some functional materials, certain permeability is required. The permeability of refractories is directly affected by their production process. The permeability of refractories can be controlled by controlling particle ratio, forming pressure and firing system. The permeability of dense shaped refractories can be measured in accordance with national standard GB/T3000-1999 (equivalent to international standard ISO8841:1991).
