Particle size measurement is an experimental work to characterize the particle size characteristics of powders by specific instruments and methods. Powder is widely used in our daily life and industrial and agricultural production. Such as flour, cement, plastics, papermaking, rubber, ceramics, medicine and so on. In different application fields, the requirements for powder properties are different. Among all the indicators reflecting powder properties, particle size distribution is one of the most concerned indicators in all application fields. Therefore, it is a very important work to objectively and truly reflect the particle size distribution of powders. Now let me talk about the basic knowledge and methods of granularity testing.




Basic knowledge of granularity testing




1. Particles: Geometric bodies with specific shapes in a range of sizes. Here, the size is generally between millimeters and nanometers. Particles refer not only to solid particles, but also to liquid particles such as droplets and oil droplets.




2. Fenxiu: a group of particles consisting of a large number of particles of different sizes. 3. Size: The size of a particle is called the size of a particle.




4. Particle size distribution: The percentage of different particle sizes in the total amount of powder reflected by specific instruments and methods. There are two forms: interval distribution and cumulative distribution. Interval distribution, also known as differential distribution or frequency distribution, represents the percentage content of particles in a series of particle size ranges. The cumulative distribution is also called integral distribution, which indicates the percentage content of particles smaller than or larger than a certain size.




5. Representation of granularity distribution:




(1) tabular method: tabular method is used to list particle size distribution and cumulative distribution one by one. (2) Graphic method: the method of expressing granularity distribution in the form of histogram and curve in the right angle system. (3) Functional method: the method of expressing granularity distribution by mathematical function. This method is generally used in theoretical research. For example, the famous Rosin-Rammler distribution is a function distribution.




6. Size and Equivalent Size:




The particle size is the particle diameter. This concept is very simple and clear, so what is the equivalent particle size, and what is the relationship between the particle size and the equivalent particle size? We know that only a sphere has a diameter. Other shapes have no diameter. Most of the particles that make up the powder are not spherical, but various irregular shapes, such as flakes, needles, polygons and so on. In theory, these particles with complex shapes can not be directly expressed by the concept of diameter. In practice, diameter is the most intuitive and simplest quantity to describe a particle size. We hope to use such a quantity to describe the particle size, so we introduce the concept of equivalent particle size in the practice of particle size measurement.
